She was wearing torn blue jeans, suede moccasins, and a tattered Pink Floyd T-shirt she borrowed from her friend Ryan and never gave back.  Her shiny black hair was parted right down the middle and perfectly feathered on both sides, like the wings of a raven or some other fine bird.

Her big drop earrings swayed with her hips when she walked, and he could tell right away she had an attitude.  Her right forearm was cuffed in a serpent bracelet that snaked its way from her wrist to her elbow.  Her makeup was light except for dark brown eyes lined in deep purple shadow.  She was younger than he was – too young – but there was something about her that he just couldn’t shake.

As for her, she thought he was cute, but way out of her league.  For one thing, he was too old – a junior at a rival high school.  For another, he was too good looking.  He had long blonde hair that had, thankfully, never succumbed to the evils of a teasing comb or can of Aquanet.  And the look of him – dressed in his dark shirt, Levi’s and red Chuck Taylor’s – made her blush a little when she could muster up the nerve to actually look at him.

She liked him right away, but it would be at least two years until she found out he felt the same way about her.  Yet there was something in that first moment that changed them both forever.  A subtle shift, as two old souls in children’s bodies looked into each other, and into their future.  This unexplained knowing, or desire to know, was an experience they would both later describe as something rare and mystical – a phenomenon known as “love at first sight.”

Twenty years later she still thinks he’s cute, but definitely not out of her league any more.  And, even though she does still tend to have an attitude, there’s something about her that he just can’t shake.

So How Was Your Week? January 11, 2008

What a week…  I turned 35, my cat died this morning and my husband blew off my birthday for a business meeting.  Then, he blew off my make-up birthday day for yet another business meeting.  Needless to say, I’m feeling a little shitty.

The big 3-5 doesn’t bother me.  I actually feel like I’m in the prime of my life right now – both powerful and vulnerable, with world of opportunity at my fingertips.  As for the cat, she was about 19 years old and incontinent, so at least the house will smell better.

But my husband, that’s the one that’s really getting to me.  Believe me, I understand how work can get in the way of your personal life – been there, done that.  And sadly, it’s not as if I haven’t blown his birthday off at least once or twice for a big event I was planning or a deadline I was working to meet (damn the irony, or is it hypocrisy?).

So, being the understanding and caring wife that I am, I tried to play it off like I was totally mature and okay with the whole work thing.  But, unfortunately, I’m not that big of a person.  Sensing my annoyance – probably because I was yelling at him a lot (I love a man who understands subtlety) – my husband tried to make up for his negligence by taking me out for lunch today.  Unfortunately, his work phone rang approximately 712 times – he took every call.  So how was your week?
